The alkaline diet is becoming more popular so you need to find out the facts and what you should be avoiding!

So what exactly is the Alkaline diet and does it work?

The Alkaline diet is becoming more popular and people seem to get really great results with it. We all want to be healthy and life a healthy lifestyle and there are a lot of things a person can do, to make it happen. Our health and well-being largely depends of our lifestyle and what we put in your mouths. People want to be healthy, but generally they are not willing to make the necessary changes to become healthier. There are a lot of things that people don`t know about nutrition and what foods they should be eating and what they should avoid.

alkaline foods sampleThe alkaline  diet – also known as the Alkaline Acid Diet and the Acid Alkaline Diet – is basically a dietary procedure, which is based on the consumption of specific foods, which burns inside the body and leaves ash. The incombustible ash – also known as alkaline residue – composes of iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc and copper. Foods are classified in three different categories: acid, neutral and alkaline. The classification is determined by the pH level in the ash, when it is diluted in water.

 

The Alkaline Diet puts the emphasis on avoiding acidic foods and focusing more on alkaline foods such as nuts, citrus fruits, vegetables, legumes and tubers. It discouraged people from eating meat, grains, dairy products and too much salt, because they are acidic. The goal of this diet, is to create  alkalinity of 7.35-7.45, and it helps to maintain the proper balance of acid-base homeostasis in blood. For the body to sustain itself properly, the pH has to be at the right level.

It is very clear that an acidic body is not able to fight of diseases very well and the immune system is not as strong. If you take in certain foods, it creates a chemical effect, which in turn has a direct effect on the body`s natural pH level. The more acidic your body is, the less optimum the your body`s pH level is. Like I mentioned above, the proper pH level is around 7.35-7.45, which is a little alkaline. This kind of an environment helps our cells function really well and help fight the body against various diseases.

The pH of  food plays a key role in an alkaline diet

The thing is that the blood itself creates the proper pH level in the body and it generally does not go below 7.35. If it does go lower than 7.35, then acidosis occurs. So in orderalkaline diet vegetables for the body to maintain the proper level on pH and avoid acidosis, it takes away vital minerals from the bones, because minerals are alkaline. This also the reason why people get generative diseases, tumors and osteoporosis – the body tries desperately to keep the body alkaline.

More and more health practitioners and alternative doctors, are understanding that excess acidity is one of the most serious health problems around. The main problem lies with the acid-rich foods that our modern day diets contain. People like eating foods that taste great and don`t care what kind of an effect this has on their body. Does this mean that people should be avoiding eating meat all together?

There are a lot of things you can do, to improve your body`s pH level. And one of the ways is to eat less meat or stop eating meat all together. But it would be a much better option to eliminate foods containing unhealthy fats, sugar, processed foods, caffeine and general acid rich foods. If you change your eating habits and start eating healthy, organic foods with plenty of vegetables and healthy fruits, there is no need to give up eating meat. It is always useful to be aware of which foods are alkaline and which are acidic. But I don`t believe it is always necessary to take drastic measures, like giving up eating meat or any other foods.

Steps to a balanced alkaline diet

You can start by reducing the amount of acidic foods that you consume with every meal. Moderation is the key to maintain a successful regimen of any sorts, especially when it comes to dieting.

Although it might seem that citrus fruits would have an acidifying effect on the body, the citric acid they contain actually has an alkalizing effect in the system therefore keeping an eye on what foods you consume will be vital for a balanced and healthy alkaline diet.

Note that a food’s acid or alkaline forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the food itself. For example, lemons are very acidic, however the end products they produce after digestion and assimilation are very alkaline so, lemons are alkaline forming in the body. Likewise, meat will test alkaline before digestion, but it leaves very acidic residue in the body so, like nearly all animal products, meat is very acid forming.
